How do Formula SAE competitions work?

One of the most common misconceptions about Formula SAE is about how our vehicles are raced and evaluated. Individuals often mistakenly believe that our team spends all year preparing for a wheel-to-wheel, Formula 1-style race. Though that would be exciting, that is not how Formula SAE events are structured.

Our team attends two competitions each year; one in Lincoln, Nebraska, and another in Hockenheim, Germany. While Lincoln’s roster is primarily filled by American teams, Formula Student Germany (FSG) is a global competition attended by teams from all over the world.

At both competitions, there are 1000 total points available split among both static and dynamic events:

  • In static events, our vehicles are scrutinized down to the millimeter by judges who evaluate all aspects of our cars. From the soundness of our design, all the way to the cost of manufacturing. Static events include categories such as cost analysis, business presentation, and engineering design, where a panel of judges from the automotive and motorsport industry comes from all over the world to score our cars’ final design.

  • Dynamic events are by far the most exciting part of competition. After a hard year's work, Formula SAE students get to watch each other's cars racing at the limit. Formula SAE uses a style of racing called Autocross where, instead of driving on a road course or oval track, a course is set up on a flat surface using traffic cones as track-boundaries. Dynamic events are comprised of autocross, acceleration, skidpad, and endurance. Endurance is a grueling 13 mile event where teams are pushed to the limit. Endurance it makes up 400 of the 1000 available points and many teams do not make it to the event, let alone finish.
